Australian Open 2022 and 2023: from first round to fourth round
Rune's first Australian Open main draw coincided with a milestone: on 17 January 2022, the day the tournament began, he entered the top 100 for the first time at No. 99. In the first round he led South Korea's Soonwoo Kwon, then No. 54, by two sets to one but lost 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, 3-6, 2-6.
A year later, fresh from his Paris Masters title, he arrived as world No. 10 and won his first three matches without dropping a set – Filip Krajinović, Maxime Cressy and Ugo Humbert. His fourth-round match against Andrey Rublev, then No. 6, became one of his most dramatic at a major: Rune came back from two sets to one down, but Rublev won the fifth-set tiebreak for a 3-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, 6-7(9) scoreline.
Australian Open 2024: an early exit against Cazaux
Rune started 2024 by reaching the Brisbane final, which he lost to Grigor Dimitrov, and came to Melbourne ranked No. 8. He beat Yoshihito Nishioka in four sets but lost in the second round to France's Arthur Cazaux, then No. 122, 6-7(4), 4-6, 6-4, 3-6. It was an unsettled time in his team: Severin Lüthi left after the tournament and the partnership with Boris Becker ended in early February 2024. More on our Holger Rune coach page.
Holger Rune at the Australian Open 2025: three wins, then Sinner
Ranked No. 13, Rune needed five sets to beat Zhizhen Zhang in the first round and four tight sets, with two tiebreaks, to get past Matteo Berrettini. Against Miomir Kecmanović in the third round he again trailed two sets to one before winning the last two 6-4, 6-4. That set up a second fourth-round appearance, against world No. 1 Jannik Sinner. Rune took the second set, but Sinner won 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. According to ATP data, the run earned him $258,048. Sinner leads their ATP head-to-head 3-2 – see our head-to-head page.
Australian Open 2026: injury kept him at home
Rune ruptured his left Achilles tendon in the Stockholm semifinal on 18 October 2025 and had surgery in Copenhagen on 21 October, so it was clear early on that he would miss the 2026 Australian Open. It was the first time since his 2022 debut that he was absent from Melbourne, and the start of a year in which he missed all four majors. The full picture is on our Grand Slams page.
Holger Rune's record in Melbourne
Rune is 7-4 in Australian Open main draws. Four of his eleven matches there have gone to five sets, and he has split them: defeats to Soonwoo Kwon in 2022 and Rublev in 2023, wins over Zhang and Kecmanović in 2025. By ranking, his best win at the event came against Berrettini, then No. 34, while two of his defeats came against top-10 players, Rublev and Sinner. In 2025 the tournament was followed straight away by a Davis Cup tie against Serbia in Copenhagen. His wider numbers are on our Holger Rune stats page.
Time difference: why matches are at night in Denmark
In January Melbourne is ten hours ahead of Denmark, because Australia is on summer time. The day session usually starts at 11am local time, which is 1am Danish time (CET), and the night session at 7pm local time, which is 9am in Denmark. For Danish fans that means day-session matches are played in the middle of the night or early morning, while a night-session match on one of the main arenas can be watched over breakfast.
Where to watch the Australian Open in Denmark
In Denmark the Australian Open is shown by Warner Bros. Discovery on Eurosport and the HBO Max streaming service (as of 23 October 2026) – not on TV 2, which has the regular ATP Tour in 2026, nor on DR, which has Wimbledon. The full overview is on our where to watch page. Use official broadcasters only; YouTube carries highlights, not full matches.
