Holger Rune Tennis writes about tennis, and a few of our pages cover betting and bookmakers. That is why we take responsible gambling seriously. Gambling is for adults aged 18 and over only, and it should be entertainment – never a way to make money or solve financial problems.
Adults only, and only with licensed operators
In Denmark you must be 18 to gamble, and operators have to verify your age and identity, usually with MitID. In other countries the minimum age may be higher. Only gamble with operators licensed in your country – in Denmark, by the Danish Gambling Authority (Spillemyndigheden). Only licensed operators are bound by the rules that protect players, and in Denmark only they are connected to the self-exclusion register ROFUS.
Set limits before you bet
Danish law requires licensed operators to make you set a deposit limit before you can start playing. You choose whether it applies per day, week or month, and raising it takes effect after 24 hours at the earliest. Use the limit actively, and consider setting time limits too:
- Decide in advance how much you will spend and treat it as the price of the entertainment.
- Never gamble with borrowed money or money meant for rent, bills or food.
- Never chase losses by betting more.
- Take breaks, and do not gamble when you are drunk, upset or stressed.
Warning signs of a gambling problem
Problem gambling often develops gradually. Pay attention if you recognise one or more of these signs in yourself or someone close to you:
- You spend more money or time on gambling than you planned.
- You hide your gambling or lie about it to family and friends.
- You borrow money or sell things to gamble or to cover losses.
- You feel restless or irritable when you try to stop.
- Gambling affects your work, studies, finances or relationships.
ROFUS: self-exclusion in Denmark
ROFUS, the Danish register of voluntarily excluded players, is run by the Danish Gambling Authority. Registering excludes you from every operator with a Danish licence. You can choose a 24-hour pause, a temporary exclusion of one, three or six months, or a permanent exclusion. A permanent exclusion does not expire on its own; you can ask for it to be lifted no earlier than one year after registering. Registration is done with MitID at rofus.nu.

Help outside Denmark
In the United Kingdom, GamCare (gamcare.org.uk) runs the National Gambling Helpline and BeGambleAware (begambleaware.org) offers free, confidential advice; GamStop lets you self-exclude from British licensed sites. Gamblers Anonymous has self-help groups in many countries. Wherever you live, your national gambling regulator can point you to local support.
