Holger Rune at the French Open – Roland Garros

The Paris clay is Holger Rune’s Grand Slam: a junior title, two quarterfinals and dramatic matches. Every result year by year.

Updated 24 October 2026 ·

The French Open is Holger Rune's best Grand Slam. He won the boys' title at Roland Garros in 2019 and reached the men's quarterfinals in both 2022 and 2023, losing each time to Casper Ruud. He has not won the men's title. In 2026 he withdrew because of his Achilles injury, so the 2027 French Open is his next chance.

The 2019 junior title: when Holger Rune won the French Open

If you are wondering whether Holger Rune has won Roland Garros, the answer is yes – as a junior. Seeded seventh in the 2019 boys' singles, he went all the way and beat American Toby Kodat 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-0 in the final. In October 2019 he became world No. 1 in the junior rankings. As a professional, his best result in Paris is the quarterfinals. More on his early years on our Holger Rune biography page.

Holger Rune at the French Open 2022: the quarterfinal and Casper Ruud

Rune came to Paris in 2022 ranked No. 40, a few weeks after winning his first ATP title in Munich. In the first round he beat No. 15 Denis Shapovalov 6-3, 6-1, 7-6(4), and after routine wins over Henri Laaksonen and home player Hugo Gaston he met world No. 4 Stefanos Tsitsipas in the fourth round. Rune won 7-5, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 – still his only Grand Slam win over a top-10 player.

That made him the first Danish man in the Open Era to reach a Grand Slam quarterfinal. There he faced Norway's Casper Ruud, then No. 8. Rune levelled at a set all, but Ruud won the third-set tiebreak and the match 6-1, 4-6, 7-6(2), 6-3.

French Open 2023: another quarterfinal – and Ruud again

A year later Rune was world No. 6, with Patrick Mouratoglou back in his corner for the tournament. He beat Christopher Eubanks in four sets, received a walkover when Gaël Monfils withdrew and saw off Genaro Alberto Olivieri. In the fourth round he edged Francisco Cerundolo in a fifth-set tiebreak, 7-6(3), 3-6, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6(7). In the quarterfinals Ruud, now No. 4, beat him again, 6-1, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. Rune trails Ruud 2-6 overall in the ATP head-to-head – see our head-to-head page.

French Open 2024 and 2025: Zverev in five sets and the Halys match

Ranked No. 13 in 2024, Rune beat Daniel Evans, Flavio Cobolli (after a fifth-set tiebreak) and Jozef Kovalik. Against world No. 4 Alexander Zverev in the fourth round he led by two sets to one, but the German won 4-6, 6-1, 5-7, 7-6(2), 6-2 – one of the closest matches of Rune's Grand Slam career.

In 2025, as No. 10, he beat Roberto Bautista Agut and Emilio Nava before a tense third round against Frenchman Quentin Halys on Court Philippe-Chatrier, which Rune won 4-6, 6-2, 5-7, 7-5, 6-2. Late in the third set he clashed with a spectator next to his towel box. Rune asked the supervisor to have the man removed and did not see him again for the rest of the match; afterwards he said the rest of the crowd had been very respectful. In the fourth round he lost 5-7, 6-3, 3-6, 2-6 to world No. 7 Lorenzo Musetti.

Why the Paris clay suits Holger Rune

Rune is 13-4 in French Open main draws by the ATP's count (the Monfils walkover is excluded) – more wins than at any other major – and in four appearances he has never lost before the fourth round. All four of his defeats came against players ranked in the top 10 at the time. Three of his five ATP titles came on clay: Munich in 2022 and 2023 and Barcelona in 2025, where he beat Carlos Alcaraz in the final. Paris is also home to his biggest title, though the 2022 Paris Masters was played indoors on hard courts. All his titles are on our titles page.

French Open 2026: withdrawal on 11 May

After the Achilles rupture in Stockholm in October 2025 and surgery three days later, Rune was still not ready to compete, and on 11 May 2026 he withdrew from Roland Garros. He also missed Wimbledon and the US Open and did not return until the Davis Cup in September. The full timeline is on our Grand Slams page.
