Holger Rune at the Grand Slams

Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and US Open – Holger Rune’s results year by year at the four biggest tournaments in tennis.

Updated 24 October 2026 ·

Holger Rune has not won a Grand Slam title yet. His best result at a major is the quarterfinals, which he has reached three times: at the French Open (Roland Garros) in 2022 and 2023 and at Wimbledon in 2023. He missed all four Grand Slams in 2026 after rupturing his Achilles tendon in October 2025, and the next opportunity is the Australian Open in January 2027.

Holger Rune Grand Slam record: the numbers

Rune made his Grand Slam debut at the 2021 US Open, coming through qualifying and drawing Novak Djokovic in the first round. From 2022 he played every major until injury wiped out his 2026 season. Across main draws he is 29-17 by the ATP's count, which leaves out walkovers.

The split shows where he is most at home. The Paris clay has brought by far the most wins, while the US Open is the major where he has found it hardest to go deep. The table below is our own count based on ATP match data.

The four majors one by one

Australian Open

Rune lost in the first round in Melbourne in 2022, then reached the round of 16 in 2023 and 2025. In 2023 Andrey Rublev beat him in a fifth-set tiebreak; in 2025 he ran into Jannik Sinner, then world No. 1. Every match and the time difference are on our Holger Rune Australian Open page.

French Open (Roland Garros)

Paris is where he won the 2019 boys' title and where he has both of his major quarterfinals, each time stopped by Casper Ruud. He lost a five-setter to Alexander Zverev in the 2024 round of 16 and fell to Lorenzo Musetti at the same stage in 2025. The full story is on our Holger Rune French Open page.

Wimbledon

Grass took time: a first-round loss in 2022 was followed by a quarterfinal against Carlos Alcaraz in 2023 and a fourth-round meeting with Novak Djokovic in 2024. In 2025 he went out in the first round to Nicolas Jarry. See our Holger Rune Wimbledon page.

US Open

His 2021 debut against Djokovic is still remembered in Denmark: Rune took the second set on a tiebreak before cramps took over. The third round in 2022 remains his best run in New York. More on our Holger Rune US Open page.

Why the majors are different: best of five sets

Men play best of five sets at the Grand Slams, against best of three on the rest of the ATP Tour. The draw has 128 players, so the champion has to win seven matches in two weeks. That rewards fitness and patience and leaves room for comebacks.

Rune has had plenty of long days. By our count of ATP match data he has played 12 five-set matches at the majors and won seven of them, including a fifth-set tiebreak against Francisco Cerundolo at Roland Garros 2023 and two wins over Quentin Halys (Wimbledon 2024 and Roland Garros 2025). His five-set defeats include Rublev in Melbourne 2023, Zverev in Paris 2024 and Jarry at Wimbledon 2025.

His 2022 run in Paris was also a national milestone: as world No. 40 he beat Denis Shapovalov and Stefanos Tsitsipas and became the first Danish man in the Open Era to reach a Grand Slam quarterfinal.

Against the very best: Djokovic, Alcaraz, Sinner and Ruud

Rune has beaten several top players at Masters events, but at the majors the biggest names have usually had the upper hand. His only Grand Slam win over a top-10 player came against Tsitsipas, then No. 4, in the fourth round of the 2022 French Open.

His defeats have come against Djokovic (US Open 2021, Wimbledon 2024), Alcaraz (Wimbledon 2023), Sinner (Australian Open 2025), Zverev (French Open 2024) and twice against Ruud in Paris. He trails Ruud 2-6 in the ATP head-to-head, with five of those six defeats on clay. All the rivalries are on our head-to-head page.

Why Holger Rune missed every Grand Slam in 2026

On 18 October 2025 Rune ruptured his left Achilles tendon in the Stockholm semifinal against Ugo Humbert while leading by a set. He had surgery in Copenhagen three days later, which ruled out the 2026 Australian Open. On 11 May 2026 he withdrew from Roland Garros, on 18 June from Wimbledon (a knee problem picked up in training had been added to the Achilles rehab) and on 21 August from the US Open. He finally returned in the Davis Cup in Hillerød on 18–19 September 2026, 335 days after the injury.

Holger Rune is No. 1205 in the ATP rankings (as of 19 October 2026), but he can enter tournaments on a protected ranking of No. 14.
