Holger Rune’s age, height and full name
Holger Rune is 23 (as of 24 October 2026). He was born on 29 April 2003 in Gentofte, just north of Copenhagen, so his birthday falls in the middle of the European clay-court swing.

His full name is Holger Vitus Nødskov Rune. Rune is his mother Aneke Rune’s surname, while Nødskov is the surname of his father, Anders Nødskov. On the tour he is simply Holger Rune.

Growing up in Charlottenlund
Rune grew up in Charlottenlund, in the municipality of Gentofte, with his parents and his older sister Alma. Alma played tennis first and her little brother followed. His first club was Skovshoved IF, where he started at six and met Lars Christensen, who coached him throughout his childhood. He later played for HIK in Hellerup and, from the age of 18, for KB in Copenhagen.
He was winning titles early: Danish U12 mixed doubles champion with Clara Tauson in 2014 and European U14 champion in 2017. According to the Danish sports federation DIF, his parents sold their summer house and borrowed against their home to fund his junior career – more on the Holger Rune family page.
Little is known about his schooling. According to the Danish rail operator DSB’s magazine Ud & Se, he attended a public school in Gentofte and switched to an elite-sport school in ninth grade before going full-time into tennis. The name of the school has not been made public.
The Mouratoglou Academy and the world’s best junior
In 2016, aged 13, Rune moved his training to Patrick Mouratoglou’s academy in Biot near Nice. In April 2018 he made his Davis Cup debut for Denmark at 14 years and 11 months – the youngest Dane ever. In June 2019 he won the French Open boys’ singles title, beating Toby Kodat in the final, and in October 2019 he became the ITF junior world No. 1.
Who was his idol? Sources differ: English-language reference works name Novak Djokovic, while portraits by DIF (2019) and Tennis Majors (2025) mention Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. Three years after his junior title he beat Djokovic in the Paris Masters final.
Where does Holger Rune live?
Holger Rune lives in Monte Carlo, Monaco, not far from the academy in the south of France where he has trained since his teens. He also has a flat in Copenhagen as a base in Denmark. We do not publish addresses or details of private homes.
Playing style
Rune is a right-handed baseliner with a two-handed backhand. His biggest asset against the best has been raising his level in big matches: at the 2022 Paris Masters he beat five top-10 players at one event, and he leads Stefanos Tsitsipas 4-0 head-to-head. Tennis.com singled out his return in May 2023, describing how he uses it as an attacking shot and keeps varying it.
Holger Rune’s career in brief
In June 2021 the ATP fined him EUR 1,500 after he used homophobic slurs against Tomás Martín Etcheverry in a Challenger semifinal in Biella. He apologised publicly, called his words unacceptable and said he had nothing against the LGBT+ community.
He entered the top 100 in January 2022 and won his first three ATP titles that year: Munich, Stockholm and the Paris Masters, where he beat Djokovic 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 in the final and became the first man to beat five top-10 players at one event outside the ATP Finals. In 2023 he won Munich again, reached the Monte-Carlo and Rome finals and the quarterfinals at Roland Garros and Wimbledon, rose to No. 4 on 21 August and played the ATP Finals. In April 2025 he beat Carlos Alcaraz 7-6(6), 6-2 to win Barcelona, his fifth title.
On 18 October 2025 he ruptured his left Achilles tendon in the Stockholm semifinal against Ugo Humbert and had surgery in Copenhagen three days later. He missed all four Grand Slams in 2026 and returned after 335 days in the Davis Cup in Hillerød in September 2026, beating Iliyan Radulov and Grigor Dimitrov. Most recently he lost to Daniel Altmaier 6-1 6-7(5) 4-6 in round 1 of the Shanghai Masters (7 October 2026).
He is No. 1205 in the ATP rankings (as of 19 October 2026) because his 2025 points have expired, so he enters events on a protected ranking. His next tournament is Swiss Indoors Basel (26 Oct – 1 Nov). Read the full story on the Holger Rune career page, check the current Holger Rune ranking or meet his coaching team.
