Holger Rune's best US Open result is the third round, reached in 2022. He made his Grand Slam debut in New York in 2021 as a qualifier against Novak Djokovic and won a set before cramps took over. Since then he has lost in the first round in 2023 and 2024 and the second round in 2025, and in 2026 he withdrew because of his Achilles injury.

Holger Rune at the US Open 2021: qualifying and Djokovic on Arthur Ashe
Rune already knew New York from his junior days: at the 2019 US Open he was the No. 2 seed in the boys' singles but lost in the second round. That same year he won the boys' title at the French Open and later became junior world No. 1.
Two years later he was back as a professional. Ranked No. 145, he had to come through qualifying, beating Lukáš Lacko, Mitchell Krueger and Mats Moraing. The draw then handed him the toughest possible Grand Slam main-draw debut: world No. 1 Novak Djokovic on Arthur Ashe Stadium.
The 18-year-old Dane lost the first set 1-6 but won the second on a tiebreak, 7-6(5). Early in the third set he began to cramp and, despite treatment, could not move freely for the rest of the match. He refused to retire, and Djokovic won 6-1, 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-1. Afterwards Rune said he would have had a chance had he been physically 100 per cent. Their full rivalry is on our head-to-head page.
US Open 2022: the third round, his best result
Rune arrived in 2022 ranked No. 33 after a spring that brought the Munich title and a French Open quarterfinal. He beat Germany's Peter Gojowczyk 6-2, 6-4, 7-6(5), received a walkover in the second round when John Isner withdrew, and then lost to Britain's Cameron Norrie, the world No. 9, 5-7, 4-6, 1-6. It remains his best US Open result, and it was followed by the autumn in which he won Stockholm and the Paris Masters.
Holger Rune at the US Open 2023 and 2024: two first-round exits

The 2023 edition was a disappointment. Rune was world No. 4, the highest ranking of his career, but lost in the first round to Spain's Roberto Carballés Baena, then No. 63, 3-6, 6-4, 3-6, 2-6 – a player he had beaten at Wimbledon a couple of months earlier. In 2024, ranked No. 15, he lost to American Brandon Nakashima, then No. 50, 2-6, 1-6, 4-6, going out after his opening match for the second year running. That defeat came shortly after one of his best weeks on American hard courts: at the Cincinnati Masters in August 2024 he beat Matteo Berrettini, Gaël Monfils and Jack Draper among others to reach the semifinals, where Frances Tiafoe stopped him. In 2025 he again reached the Cincinnati quarterfinals a few weeks before the US Open, so his summer Masters form has not yet carried over to New York.
US Open 2025: a win, then a five-set defeat to Struff
In 2025 Rune was No. 11 and had just added fitness coach Marco Panichi to his team. He beat Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp 6-3, 7-6(4), 7-6(2) – his first US Open main-draw win since 2022 – before Jan-Lennard Struff, then No. 144, beat him in five sets, 7-6(5), 2-6, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5. Rune also played mixed doubles at the 2025 US Open with American Amanda Anisimova; they lost in the first round.
US Open 2026: withdrawal on 21 August
After rupturing his Achilles tendon in Stockholm in October 2025, Rune was still not ready to compete as the US Open approached, and on 21 August 2026 he withdrew. That completed a year in which he missed all four majors. His comeback came instead in the Davis Cup in Hillerød on 18–19 September, where he won both his singles against Bulgaria – read more on our Davis Cup page and see the season overview on our Grand Slams page.
US Open time difference and TV in Denmark
The US Open traditionally runs from late August to early September, when New York is six hours behind Denmark. The day session usually starts at 11am local time, which is 5pm Danish time, and the night session on Arthur Ashe Stadium at 7pm local time – 1am in Denmark – so an evening match can run deep into the Danish night. As of 23 October 2026 Rune has said nothing about the 2027 US Open, and the exact dates are published by the organisers. His next tournament is Swiss Indoors Basel (26 Oct – 1 Nov); see our next match page.
Warner Bros. Discovery holds exclusive US Open rights in Denmark under a five-year deal from 2023, with coverage on Eurosport and HBO Max (as of 23 October 2026) – not on TV 2, which has the regular ATP Tour in 2026. Use official broadcasters only; YouTube carries highlights, not full matches.
Overall Rune is 2-5 in US Open main draws by the ATP's count, which excludes the Isner walkover. It is his weakest Grand Slam record, but also the tournament where his Grand Slam career began.
