Holger Rune's Davis Cup debut at 14: Egypt, 2018
Rune made his debut against Egypt at the Gentoftehallen in Gentofte on 7–8 April 2018, aged 14 years and 11 months – the youngest Danish Davis Cup player ever. He beat Youssef Hossam 6-2, 7-6(14), the tiebreak ending 16-14, for Denmark's only point in a 3-1 defeat. A year later came his big junior season, with the 2019 French Open boys' title and the junior world No. 1 ranking. More on his early years on our Holger Rune biography page.
From prospect to Denmark's number one: ties from 2019 to 2025
In September 2019 Rune played Turkey in Risskov, beating Cem İlkel and losing to Altuğ Çelikbilek in a third-set tiebreak. In March 2020, just before the pandemic shut tennis down, he won both his singles against Puerto Rico in Holbæk.
By the time he returned in 2023 he was one of the best players in the world. In February, ranked No. 9, he beat Sumit Nagal and Yuki Bhambri against India in Hillerød; in September, as world No. 4, he lost in Hillerød to Brazil's Thiago Monteiro 7-6(4), 6-7(5), 2-6.
In 2025 he played two ties: against Serbia in Copenhagen early in the year he beat Miomir Kecmanović and lost to Hamad Medjedović, and on clay in Marbella against Spain in September he beat Pablo Carreño Busta but lost to Pedro Martínez 1-6, 6-4, 6-7(3). In February 2026 Denmark had to do without him in Varaždin, where Croatia won 3-1, as he was still injured.
The 2026 comeback in Hillerød: Radulov, Dimitrov and a 3-2 win over Bulgaria
On 18 September 2026 Rune played his first match in 335 days. The World Group I tie against Bulgaria was held at the Royal Stage in Hillerød, and in the opening singles he beat Iliyan Radulov 6-3, 6-3. The next day he came from a set down to beat Grigor Dimitrov 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(4). With the tie level at 2-2, Elmer Møller won the deciding rubber to give Denmark a 3-2 win.
The Davis Cup carries no ATP ranking points, so the wins did not change his ranking, but they count in the ATP head-to-head, where he now leads Dimitrov 3-2. See our head-to-head page.
Holger Rune's Davis Cup record: 10-4 in singles
According to ATP data, Rune has won 10 and lost 4 Davis Cup singles: 1-0 in 2018, 1-1 in 2019, 2-0 in 2020, 2-1 in 2023, 2-2 in 2025 and 2-0 in 2026. His Davis Cup doubles record has not been compiled in the sources we use. All four defeats went to three sets, and two of them – against Çelikbilek in 2019 and Martínez in 2025 – were decided in a final-set tiebreak. His wider career is covered on our career page.
Next Davis Cup tie: the 2027 Qualifiers
The win over Bulgaria put Denmark into the first round of the 2027 Davis Cup Qualifiers, to be played early in 2027. The draw is expected in November 2026; as of 23 October 2026 the opponent, venue and dates are unknown, and it is not yet known whether Rune will be selected. Once it is settled, it will appear on our schedule page. Until then the ATP Tour comes first: his next tournament is Swiss Indoors Basel (26 Oct – 1 Nov).
How the Davis Cup works today
The Davis Cup is the men's team competition between nations. A tie is played over two days and consists of four singles and one doubles, all best of three sets; the first team to three points wins. Usually two singles are played on day one, and the doubles and the two reverse singles on day two.
The Qualifiers are played in two rounds, the first early in the year and the second in September. Winners move on towards the Finals in November, while first-round losers drop into World Group I in September. That is exactly the path Denmark took in 2026: defeat in Croatia in February, victory over Bulgaria in World Group I in September and a new chance in the 2027 Qualifiers.
Davis Cup on TV in Denmark
Davis Cup TV rights are agreed tie by tie. DR showed Denmark v Bulgaria on DR2 and DRTV in September 2026, while SPORT LIVE showed Croatia v Denmark in February 2026; otherwise matches can be watched on the Davis Cup's own video service. As of 23 October 2026 no broadcaster has been announced for Denmark's next tie. Our where to watch page has the full TV overview.
